Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) & Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT)
Women who suffer menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats, decrease
libido (sexual appetite), decreased sense of well being, vaginal dryness, depression,
change of mood, stress ‘unable to cope’ … etc. have felt tremendous improvement when
treated with hormones. If you look around, you will find women are looking younger
and now enjoy life more than in the past. Hormone replacement for women is now well
established and has proven of great value and offers protection to the heart and
against osteoporosis (bone thinning). We have seen patients who had previous treatment
for depression, but after receiving our hormone treatment they felt a great improvement
and did not need their antidepressants. Depression might be one of the symptoms of
menopause rather than a psychiatric illness. Some people worry about hormones, they
do not know that Insulin for diabetes and the contraceptive pills are hormones. Menopause
is an ageing process but you can feel better and stay young for longer with hormone
replacement therapy. You can only achieve this by replacing what is missing, not
by taking vitamins, antidepressants or various crams to achieve the desired results.
Regarding men: they can go through similar changes (Viropause, Andropause or commonly
known as middle life crisis which is due to hormone imbalance or more accurately
declining). Men can feel similar symptoms as do women even at a young age. They might
suffer sexual dysfunction such as impotence (failure to have an erection), premature
ejaculation or even avoiding sex altogether. Men might notice a decrease in the ejaculate
volume and in some cases they mention that there is no ejaculation at all even if
they feel they came and had what we call a dry orgasm. They may pretend they are
asleep, or the wife might feel rejected or accuse him of being with someone else
thus causing marriage problems. We believe that men are not different from women
in this regard and all these problems could be due to hormone imbalance. We have
been offering Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) for men since 1990 with a good
success rate. Men do come back to us feeling good and younger, more active and happier,
after losing every hope. They can get back the lustre in life, which they had lost
for some time or even years. Men might notice that they are tired all time even if
they sleep for long hours, usually they sleep less. They are less motivated, postponing
their work till tomorrow which never comes. Some men feel their libido (sexual Desire)
is very good but have a variety of symptoms. Wife and family might notice the change
of mood and that the man is not interested in social company or visits, wants to
be left alone, feeling tired.
The Medical Consultation
After having the initial medical
consultation and a blood tests screening to find the underlying cause to the problem,
our doctors will be able to advise you on which form of treatment will suit you best.
For example, women have the choice between tablets, skin patches which release the
hormones through the skin, or the implants which are simply tablets inserted under
the skin (under local anaesthetic) and which will last about 6 months from insertion.
Investigations:
Investigations such as blood and hormones screenings, ultra sound
scans. Cervical smear or prostate cancer test may be necessary depending on the age
of the patient. All necessary investigations will be discussed with you prior to
any testing.
Types of Hormones
Male hormones come in the form of tablets, jel, injections
or pellets (tablets under the skin). Our doctors will advise you on the best form
suit you most. It is important to mention that the hormone pellets (implants) have
been available sine the 1930’s. Some patients prefers long acting hormone injections
which can last up to 8 weeks and is definitely cheaper than the hormone implants.
From our experience, we found that hormone tablets or jel are not effective. All
possible benefits, side effects or any possible complications will be discussed with
you before that start of any treatment and of course after your approval.
