Male Circumcision

Circumcision is a simple operation almost pain free, can have excellent effect in many ways. All our patients were very happy with their operation and results. We shall ask you if you so wish to bring your favorite music CD so you can listen to it while having your operation or you can listen to our soft music.

The excess penile skin usually covering the glans of the penis (the head) is known as the foreskin. The foreskin might be too long and excessive. It might be a cause of soreness or infection due to the anaerobic bacteria. The foreskin in some men might become tight causing discomfort or pain when there is an erection (to the extent of sexual dysfunction due to pain accompanying the erection) and the patient might have to wait for the erection to disappear so he can push the foreskin forward. Occasionally urine might drip inside the foreskin causing a urine smell or soreness of the penis. Sometimes the soreness is transferred to the women via sexual intercourse. In some cases it is performed for religious or cultural reasons as in Jews and Muslims.

So circumcision is performed for cosmetic, hygiene, Medical and other reasons. The purpose of this simple operation is to surgically remove the excess penile skin.

Lots of people have much fear of the thought of the operation. Some think the operation is barbaric. The operation is a very simple one, just removing a piece of skin which is no different to the skin on the back of the hands or like eyelid operation. It is not extra sensitive as some think. In fact, the most sensitive part of the penis is the head and the operation has nothing to do with the head.

We usually perform this operation under local anaesthetic. We only perform this surgery for adults and not children.

Our patients mentioned that they felt no more than a scratch post-operatively. Simple pain killer tablets such as paracetamol might be used on the first day or two of the operation. There is no change of dressing, actually the dressing might be removed after a day. Actually most self employed patients can go back to work the same day.

We have changed our technique over the years that all the skin stitches are dissolvable and buried under the skin. This is a major cause for much reduced pain after the operation and in avoiding the discomfort of removing them.. Patient can resume sexual activity after about 10-15 days after the operation.

There might be some bruising after the operation but normally disappears after 7-10 days. We normally use a diathermy machine (electric cautery) to stop any bleeding points during the operation.

There are some web sites do not encourage circumcision for whatever the reason and they mention that sexual feeling decreases after the surgery. From our experience we never had such a problem with any of our patients. In fact they were easily aroused even on walking and rubbing against their under wear.

We believe that this operation is performed routinely to all American newborn babies. Some doctors in Australia are fighting for this operation to be performed on the NHS there.

Patients are usually very pleased with results and we are pleased that we never had any problems or complaints from any of our patients regarding their surgery for the past 18 years.

We have dealt with patients from other clinics who had unsuccessful or bad circumcision and we have achieved very good results for them too. These patients will need a special assessment and a quotation will be given as to the amount of work involved (this is different from straight forward first time circumcision).
